Billionaire doctor offers to host California court records

Written by Jeremy Martin on October 27, 2011.

A billionaire doctor has offered the state of California’s judiciary a rescue package for its troubled court records system upgrade project, which is four years behind schedule and hundreds of millions of dollars over budget.

Dr Patrick Soon-Shiong, who made his fortune developing the breast cancer treatment drug Abraxane, has offered California’s Administrative Office of the Courts a 20 million grant and the use of his company’s data centre, US website Courthouse News Service reported yesterday.

Soon-Shiong is interested “in ensuring that for public safety and public welfare reasons that we have the ability within the judicial branch to share material information that is critical to our decision-making,” said Justice Terence Bruiniers, who described the offer as a “game-changer”.

Having sold the company behind Abraxane last year, Soon-Shiong is now developing a hosting service for medical records. Courthouse News reports that the similarity between this system and the court records system is what attracted Soon-Shiong to the project.

Georgia may cut jobless benefits to pay off federal loan

Written by Michael Harris on October 21, 2011.

But the move is being criticized by advocates of out-of-work Georgians, who say Labor Commissioner Mark Butler is favoring businesses over workers

In a meeting with some of the legislature’s House and Senate leadership Thursday, Butler proposed cutting weekly jobless benefits for top earners to $300 from $330. Any changes would have to approved by state lawmakers and Gov. Nathan Deal. If  a benefits cut is approved, it would not impact workers now drawing checks but those who make new claims.

Advocates for workers would rather the state ask businesses to pay more into the state’s unemployment insurance fund.

Georgia owes the federal government $721 million in loans it took out to maintain its unemployment benefit fund. There are 487,471 Georgians drawing unemployment checks, according to a state report released Thursday. The Great Recession has created a pool of long-term jobless — about 256,900 in Georgia — who have been out of work at least 27 weeks.

Butler wrote a check for $21.4 million on Oct. 1 but said changes are necessary to help Georgia pay off the loan.

SAP grows profit 140%

Written by Jeremy Martin on October 14, 2011.

SAP today announced preliminary results for its most recent financial quarter, revealing a 140% increase in operating profit to €1.8 billion.

The company grew revenues by 15% to €3.4 billion during the three months ending 31 September. License sales rose 28% to €841 million, while the “software and software-related services” segment, which includes maintenance fees, grew 16% to €2.7 billion.

By comparison, SAP’s arch rival Oracle grew its application revenues by 17% to 1.7 billion (€1.2 billion). Oracle’s applications business, in other words, is growing slightly faster than SAP’s but is still around half the size.

SAP’s net income, which it will officially report later, will be much lower than the operating profit, due to various acquisition-related charges and write downs. Nevertheless, today’s figures reveal that SAP is making a lot of money, which customers will hope to see invested in innovation.

Property value case headed to Georgia’s top court

Written by Michael Harris on October 9, 2011.

The case, Royal Capital Development v. Maryland Casualty Co., stems from damage to the Capital Building on East Paces Ferry Road suffered during construction of an adjacent parking deck in the Streets of Buckhead, a mixed-use project.

The owner of the Capital Building submitted a $2.7 million claim to Maryland Casualty, which paid $1.13 million for repairs, but wouldn’t cover the lost property value as a result of the physical damage.

The building owner, Royal Capital, sued the insurance company, saying it should cover the lost property value as well.

A federal judge in Atlanta ruled against the building owner who appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. T

Managing risk – A key skill for small businesses

Written by Jeremy Martin on September 27, 2011.

.

Successful business owners recognise very early on that identifying and managing the risks facing their business is an essential survival skill. Risk can mean many things, from an increase in competition to disruptive weather, and the trick is to put measures in place to ensure that the risks you can’t control don’t derail you completely.

Exploring new markets is one way to mitigate the risk of falling sales. According to the Federation of Small Businesses, only 23 per cent of its members nationally currently export, which leaves plenty of opportunities for SMEs to explore overseas trade for the first time.

The organisation argues that an exporting led recovery would be helped by ‘more effective and targeted promotion of the support available and tailor-made information for small businesses.’

Managing the risks and barriers to exporting
